Stop Dieting and Change Your Life Forever!

Lose 20 pounds in 20 days and change your life! If you are like most adults, you have been on more diets than you can count.  You have most likely started each diet determined to succeed.  You joined the weight loss clinic or bought the newest book on the latest “in” diet and you were ready to finally conquer your weight once and for all.  You had all the right intentions.  Armed with your food charts or pre-packaged foods, you were on a mission.  Maybe you even lost the weight you wanted to.  But what happened?  You eventually went back to your old habits and pretty soon the weight you lost is back and, guess what, it brought friends!  And once again, you have the bitter taste of defeat in your mouth….along with maybe a doughnut! There really is a better way.  Diets don’t work – it has been proven time and again.  Despite the promises made by the diet industry, who love to promise you quick and easy weight loss and a changed life, this $44 billion industry has a failure rate of 98%!  So, why do we keep going back to dieting?  Because it’s all we know and the industry is very good at convincing us they have what we need and that we can’t do it without them.  So, we keep going back, each time hoping this time is different, but it never is.  The truth is, dieting is not the answer. So, what IS the answer, you may ask.  The answer, my friend, is closer than you think – it is by tapping in to your own wisdom.  Yes, you heard me right – you already know what is right for you, you just have to finally listen to your own body and your own wisdom.  We have been taught by the diet industry not to trust our bodies, not to trust our own judgment about what is right for us and to buy into whatever it is they are trying to tell us and sell us.  And why wouldn’t they – at $44 billion a year, they are quite motivated to keep us believing that!  They don’t care why you have the weight or if you are going to learn healthy habits so you can keep the weight off.  In fact, it’s in their best interest not to help you with any of that.  They know that if they feed into the desire for a quick fix, instant solution to weight loss, people will continually come back and pay them money, only to fail and come back again.    The truth is you don’t have to lose 20 pounds in 20 days.  What’s the hurry?  Permanent changes take time and if you can learn to make small changes in your lifestyle and how you care for yourself, chances are they will become habit and will become who you are.  Just think – if you change one habit every two weeks, in a year, you will have changed 26 habits!  As the parable tells us, “slow and steady wins the race”.  By making slow and steady progress, you will develop the habits and understanding you need to make a healthy lifestyle a permanent thing. Believe! – The first step to developing a healthier lifestyle is to believe you can do it and believe in yourself.  You don’t need to know how you are going to get there, you just have to believe that somehow you can do it.  Action! – The next step is to take action towards your goal.  You start by creating very small, achievable goals.  As you achieve the goals you set, you create momentum and each success builds on the next.  Your first goal could be as simple as replacing one can of pop a day with a glass of water or parking as far away from the door at the mall that you can.  To start, your goals need to be something you can easily succeed at.  Each success builds on previous successes and creates the momentum you need to change your habits and create the healthy life you deserve.Support! – The final step is finding the support you need to help you move forward.  You may need to examine things like why you aren’t making healthy decisions, how your extra weight may be serving you, what food means to you, your motivations for eating when you do and what you do, etc.  For every person, the reasons are different.  For some, the weight keeps them safe or protects them from having to take risks.  For others, food is a way to numb their feelings or frustrations, so instead of feeling something they eat. Some people use food to comfort themselves and get the care they can’t get from somewhere else.  Some people struggle with caring for themselves and making themselves and their health a priority because they are so busy taking care of everyone else in their lives.  Some people are afraid of being thin because they feel being thin means being someone they aren’t.  Everyone has their own story.  In considering your own story, here are some questions to ponder: a)  What is your weight protecting you from? b)  How is your weight serving you? c)  What would you do if you woke up tomorrow at your perfect weight? d) What are you avoiding because of your weight? e) What does your weight give you permission to do? f) Are you eating feelings you should be expressing? g) What scares you about being thin? h) What stops you from making yourself a priority? i) Do you love and support yourself or are you your own worst enemy? j) What does food mean to you? k) Why do you eat? l) What fears are stopping you from making healthy lifestyle choices? m) How would other people react if you were thinner and healthier? n) What does living a healthier lifestyle mean to you? What fears come up? What hopes come up? What resistance do you feel? o) Do you really know yourself? Your wants, needs, desires, hopes, dreams? These are just a few questions to consider.  Living a healthier life of your choice really is possible.  It won’t happen overnight, but through consistent, small changes, or baby steps, as I like to call them, you can change your life for the better and along the way you learn to love and honor yourself and make your life and your health a priority.
